127.0.0.1:62893: Localhost Connection and Port Explained

127.0.0.1:62893

What the IP address 127.0.0.1 and Port 62893

What a local host is what the IP address 127.0.0.1:62893 is and what a loop back is in TCP IP and so you’ve probably seen the name of the alias local host  and you’ve probably seen 127.0.0.1 local host  actually resolves to 127.0.0.1 and and this is a special address that is known as a loop back and what this is is it actually is used to reference the machine that you are logged into so let’s take a look at this over.

let’s talk about Network ports when we talk about Network ports we often think of port forwarding however Network ports aren’t all about that Network ports are related to a particular service or a process that runs on top of the network devices operating system each service uses a specific port to communicate with other devices or services on the network think of a network device as an apartment building the building has its own unique address.

We can use this ip adress and port 127.0.0.1:62893 for vpn services its directly open vpn connections. We also use the host and port that is given 127.0.0.1:62893 for port forwarding and connect the system.

here by looking at some machines that we have on a local area network right here and on the internet so this is my local area network right here and this is my my workstation that I’m logged into 192.0.2.20 and here is a server that is on my local area network so if i want to connect to this server all i need to do is

enter this IP address or an alias to the IP address that will resolve to that IP address this is my router here if i want to ping my router or something i can use this IP address here that ends in one to access that now if i want to access my local machine like if i want to ping it or access a web.

127.0.0.1 local host

127.0.0.1:62893
127.0.0.1:62893

server on it from my local machine i can use this i p address here but i might not know this i p address and i might not want to look it up or take the time to look it up or i may be going to a series of workstations or servers and i may want to like ping the machine or run another command that involves the the IP address or test a web server that’s on the machine number of things i might want to do i can use local host  or 127.0.0 to resolve to that so for example if i bring up a command prompt

here if i want to ping my local machine i can just go ping local host  and it will test my machine right here i can also do the same thing and get the same result by going 127.0.0.1 because they’re the exact same thing so that’s a that’s a fairly useful thing to know for multiple reasons and multiple commands like

for example if you do connect like a web server that does something locally on the machine it’s only running to do a particular process that you’re only going to access locally you may use local host  a lot of times also when programs are installed on a server or a workstation they might

IP address

have an administrative web interface so they might be running a little web server and and that’s only used for an administrative uh web face for the particular application that’s on the workstation or server you can use local host  or 127.0.0.1 to access it finally let’s look at this in another way so as i said if I’m sitting in a machine the local host is local host  or this IP address 127.0.0.1 but if i um log in

remotely via say a terminal or remote desktop to this server right here in remote desktop or in my remote terminal i can use local host  to refer to this machine so the context changes the same is true if i remote desktop into or use a terminal to log into a machine that’s over the internet uh either of

these things i can use local host to refer to this machine so if I’m remotely connected to a machine anything that i type in the interface that’s connected to that machine whether it’s remote desktop or terminal will reference that particular machine so that’s what local host does and what a loop back is.

What are Network Ports

127.0.0.1:62893

lets you know where it’s located that’s what the router’s IP address is for as well it helps to identify where the router can be found on the internet or a local area network each apartment in the building has a number dedicated only to it and the same goes for Network ports each Port supports or holds different services for example Port 80 is the HTTP protocol that’s used to access the web interface Port 22 is for the SSH protocol responsible for securing communication between devices and Port 53 is for the DNS

protocol which deals with identifying the IP addresses of websites based on their domain names essentially different services use different port numbers for communication now coming back to the apartment building analogy if you want to send a letter to your friend that lives in apartment 24 you must include this number in the envelope the same goes for sending information through a specific Port your

device adds the router’s IP address as the destination and a particular port number that depends on the service you’re trying to reach we hope this information about Network ports was useful we also have other great videos from our Network Essentials Series .
